This guide shows you exactly what you need to do in order to apply and be accepted to any one of the US service academies. Service academies have one of the lowest acceptance rates of any university in the world, attracting tens of thousands of applicants every year, with fewer than 1 in 12 getting accepted. My purpose is to give you the information you need in order to make your application stand out, and to give you the tips you need to get accepted the first time.
I graduated from the US Air Force Academy in 2003, but this book is filled with advice for getting into any service academy: the US Military Academy, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, Coast Guard Academy, or Merchant Marine Academy. This advice comes not only from me, but from recent grads, academy liaison officers, and even admissions directors.
Once you begin the application process, you will be judged, weighed, evaluated, assessed, and appraised on every minute detail of your life up until that point. This book will show you what those evaluators are looking for, and what they are not looking for. In addition, you will learn what areas you need to highlight for acceptance, and what areas are better left out.
This book will take you through every step of the process: from the initial application through getting a Congressional nomination and interviewing with your liaison officer, all the way to preparing to make your entrance to one of the academies. You will learn common pitfalls to avoid, and ways to prepare that will put you ahead of the pack. This book also includes important documents, such as form letters, and informational links to sites that can give you further specific data about whichever academy you are considering.
With the information contained in this book, you will be ready to start one of the most arduous journeys of your life. Thousands of people have made that journey, and this book will let you learn from their experiences and allow you to avoid the mistakes that could cost you acceptance. In addition, I will address special cases, such as enlisted applicants, home-schooled applicants, foreign students, and others.
Although completing your degree at a US service academy is difficult, it is extremely rewarding for those who have the determination and character to make it through. As a young adult, it is one of the best things you can do for yourself.
