Gr 2-4-When fifth-grade Abby takes her class pet home for spring break, she is disappointed when the hamster begins to act strangely toward her and only lets her younger sister, Tess, get near him. When Abby and a friend put Mr. Nibbles inside a plastic exercise ball and leave the room, the animal disappears. Unable to find him, Abby consoles her sister in their dark bedroom closet, and they see a strange green glow in a pile of dirty clothes on the floor. It turns out to be the hamster in the glow-in-the-dark flea collar that Tess had put on him. The girls are even more surprised to discover that Mr. Nibbles has given birth to eight babies. Abby shows great responsibility in reading her hamster guide to make sure they handle the now Mrs. Nibbles and her offspring properly. She also arranges for Tess to choose one of the babies to be a pet in her own class. This is a satisfying and fast-moving story with quite a bit of factual information about the care and handling of hamsters. All of the characters except the almost nonexistent father are realistically drawn. Soft pencil drawings highlight the action. A good read for pet lovers.-Kate Kohlbeck, Randall School, Waukesha, WI
