Jessie Willcox Smith was a United States illustrator famous for her magazine work in Ladies Home Journal and children’s book illustrations. In 1884, she attended the School of Design for Women and later studied under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. After finishing school, she worked in the production department of the Ladies Home Journal for five years. She furthered her education by taking classes under Howard Pyle and also attending the Brandywine School.
Smith was a prolific painter of books and magazines for Scribner’s, McClure’s, Harper’s, Collier’s Weekly, Century and Ladies Home Journal. She is most well known for her Good Housekeeping covers which she painted from 1917 through 1933. Jessie Willcox Smith was the second woman to be inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Society of Illustrators.
