They go into the break off one of their most complete games yet, go into the NHL’s two-day Christmas recess as the first-place Rangers after wrapping up this week’s four-day, three-game capsule with a bow.
“Our goal was to approach this as a four-day season, if you will,” Brandon Dubinsky said after the Rangers imposed their will on the Flyers 4-2 last night at the Garden following victories over the Devils in New Jersey on Tuesday and against the Islanders on Broadway on Thursday. “The boys really wanted this one. We really wanted to come out with an effort and go into this break in style.”

N.Y. Post: Charles Wenzelberg
LIGHTING IT UP: Marian Gaborik beats Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov on a breakaway for his league-leading 21st goal of the season during the Rangers’ convincing 4-2 victory last night at the Garden in a Winter Classic preview.
The 21-8-4 Rangers are atop the Atlantic, holding one game in hand on the 21-9-4 Flyers, with whom they are deadlocked with 46 points. The Blueshirts, who have the fewest regulation defeats in the NHL, trail the East-leading 23-9-1 Bruins by just one point.
“Being on top looks good on paper, but we have to work hard every night for what we get,” said Henrik Lundqvist, superb throughout, never more so than when he stopped Jaromir Jagr trying to go five-hole from the doorstep on a three-on-one with the game scoreless at 7:20 of the second. “I think the difference between this team and the ones the last couple of years is that we have a little more talent.
“We’ve got great character combined with skill.”
The Rangers did not simply find the way to win last night, they dictated much of the game, taking the body, working the puck and grinding below the hash marks in playing a tempo game while also giving up very little in their own end.
“I think everyone has been looking forward to this game for a while,” said Michael Del Zotto, who consistently engaged in and won battles through 25:47 of outstanding play in the tight spots and in open ice. “We’re rolling right now.”
The Rangers earned a 2-0 lead on nearly identical plays 5:11 apart through the gut of the second, deflections in front on long wrist shots from the right side by Stu Bickel after forechecking flushed the Flyers into mistakes. Derek Stepan got the first at 10:16 before Ruslan Fedotenko converted at 15:29. When Marian Gaborik buried his sixth in four games on a breakaway for his league-leading 21st goal at 1:48 of the third, the Rangers were in control.
Dubinsky had his most formidable game of the year combining with Brian Boyle and John Mitchell on the Blueshirts’ most consistently effective line. Anton Stralman punctuated his improved play since moving up to the second pair — becoming Del Zotto’s partner after Steve Eminger went down with a separated shoulder in Phoenix last Saturday — with a perfectly executed hip check that sent Matt Read flying into the boards midway through the first.
“I think in all aspects we had a great game,” Lundqvist said. “We really wanted to go into the break with an effort like this.
“From start to finish, we did everything we were asked for.”
Coach John Tortorella wasn’t exactly the Grinch who stole first place, and he didn’t quite cry “Bah Humbug!” when asked about the standings, but the coach came close even while sending the appropriate message to his team that there are months of heavy lifting ahead.
“I’m happy the way we’re playing and that we’re grabbing points, but first place now really means nothing,” Tortorella said. “They don’t give out playoff bids or anything else on Dec. 23.”

Statue of St. Mary on the facade of Igreja da Misericrdia, bidos, Portugal.
bidos is a town (vila) of about 3100 inhabitants in central Portugal. The name of the town derives from the Latin word oppidum for fortified town. There was a settlement with the name Eburobrittium at this site already during the time of the Roman Empire. After the decline of the Roman empire the area was under control of the Visigoths until it was conquered by the Moors. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, recaptured it during the Reconquista in 1148. His grandson, King Afonso II, made the town a wedding present for his wife Urraca. Several other kings continued this custom, so that's why bidos is also called Vila das Rainhas (town of the queens).
bidos is a well-preserved example of medieval architecture and a popular tourist destination. Even today it is still surrounded by its old walls and the fortifications of the old castle.

Approaching Infinity Bridge
This set of 5 images did rather well in a recent club projected portfolio competition. For projected portfolios the pics are shown in sequence, so you don't need to worry about how they can be laid out on a stand, but they tend to do better if there's some kind of logic to the order.

Congress" border="0" width="580" height="387" />
The U.S. Capitol dome is reflected in a puddle. (Joshua Roberts / Bloomberg)
The imminent failure of the super-committee process may have this as its legacy: Somehow, it's made Congress even more unpopular.
Americans' regard for lawmakers in Washington has never been particularly high, but this year the polling has been especially grim for those on Capitol Hill.
A recent Gallup survey put congressional job approval at 13%, equaling its all-time low.
A new CNN/Opinion Research survey found that just 21% of respondents say they approve of how Republican leaders in Congress are handling their job; Democratic leaders scored only slightly higher at 29%. Both are the lowest scores in more than three years.
Quinnipiac University released its own poll Monday, which reported that most respondents said they had little faith that the 12 members of super-committee would agree on a deficit-reduction proposal before its deadline. Only 24% thought the lawmakers would reach agreement, while 69% said they wouldn't.
"American voters are way ahead of the politicians," Quinnipiac's Peter Brown said. "Watch for those job-approval ratings to sink even lower."
Should the panel's effort fail, as is widely expected, more respondents in the Quinnipiac survey said they'll blame Republicans than blame President Obama and Democrats, by a margin of 44% to 38%. But by a 10-point margin, respondents said say they want a deal with only federal spending cuts, as most Republicans favor, as opposed to a deal that includes some tax increases.
Lawmakers acknowledged that they've given their constituents little reason to have confidence in their work.
"I'm ashamed. I have to go back and apologize for what we're doing," Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) said on CBS' "Face the Nation" Sunday.
Obama has also seemed to distance himself from the super-committee process for fear of sharing in the blame, as was the case during the summer debt-ceiling negotiations in which he played a more active role.
"This committee was established by an act of Congress. It was comprised of members of Congress. Instead of pointing fingers and playing the blame game, Congress should act, fulfill its responsibility," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Monday.

On The Edge
Travelling through Australia we found this road painting, marking the Tropic of Capricorn
(23° 26' 24.70" S 113° 57' 13.73" E) on the Minilya-Exmouth Road near Lyndon in Western Australia.
Step out off the car i felt immediately "microwaved" must be around 66,6° Celsius (subjective temperature), so i shot only a few pictures to get back in the motor vehicle artificial biosphere. ;-)
Any and all helpful comments/notes and suggestions are welcome. Thanks!
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
The Tropic of Capricorn, or Southern tropic, marks the most southerly latitude on the Earth at which the Sun can be directly overhead. This event occurs at the December solstice, when the southern hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun to its maximum extent.
Tropic of Capricorn is one of the five major circles of latitude that mark maps of the Earth. It currently (Epoch 2011) lies 23° 26 16 south of the Equator.
It is currently drifting north at the rate of almost half a second (0.47) of latitude, which is about 15 metres, per year (it was at exactly 23 27' S in year 1917).
The Tropic of Capricorn is the dividing line between the Southern Temperate Zone to the south and the tropics to the north. The northern hemisphere equivalent of the Tropic of Capricorn is the Tropic of Cancer.
The Tropic of Capricorn is so named because about 2,000 years ago the sun was entering the constellation Capricornus (capricorn is Latin for goat horn) at the December solstice. In modern times the sun appears in the constellation Sagittarius during this time. The change is due to precession of the equinoxes. The word "tropic" itself comes from the Greek tropos, meaning turn, referring to the fact that the sun appears to "turn back" at the solstices.
In India, the day of Sun entering the zodiacal belt Capricorn is celebrated as Makara Sankranti festival. Tropic of Capricorn is called Makara Vrutta in Indian languages. It should be noted here that the Indian astronomical calendar is not based on the Western sidereal system but has a differential lag. Hence, the festival is celebrated on either of 14th Jan or 15th Jan every year, when, as per the Indian astronomical calendar, the Sun enters the Capricorn sign.
